What are my alternate options for metal braces?

South East Orthodontics offers a few different alternative appliance options for those who want to straighten their teeth without having to wear traditional metal braces.

Traditional braces are generally the go-to option for several reasons including their efficiency, the fact that they are budget-friendly, and their ability to take on the most complicated misalignment issues. However, there are also many reasons why traditional metal braces are not a viable option for some patients such as accessibility, physical appearance, or lifestyle. Alternative options include cosmetic braces, Incognito braces, and Invisalign.

Clear Braces

Cosmetic clear braces are essentially the same function and design as traditional braces; they are bonded to the front of your teeth with brackets and wires. But what makes cosmetic braces popular, is the fact that they are made to be the same colour as your natural teeth which makes them less noticeable, as the name suggests.

Different from their counterparts, these braces are just as effective, and produce the same results as traditional metal braces.

As is with all-natural teeth, they do need a little extra care when it comes to red wine and coffee to ensure that they don’t stain.

These braces are also a popular choice for people who want to straighten their teeth discreetly but are looking for the fastest and most effective treatment.

Incognito Lingual Braces

Incognito lingual braces are essentially a similar concept to traditional braces but instead they are attached to the backs of your teeth. Therefore, they aren’t visible from the front.

These brackets are custom made using a wax printer, and then cast in gold to sit comfortably along the backs of your teeth. A wire is then positioned along the brackets. Incognito lingual braces are fitted and bonded to your teeth meaning that they are not removable until the treatment is over, but they will be working the whole time.

Considering these braces are hidden on the backs of your teeth, it does mean that they can be awkward to clean. Yet, it’s especially important to maintain a persistent dental hygiene routine to avoid cavities and gum disease. For these braces, we recommend distinct orthodontic flosses and specific toothbrushes for you, as well as to add a few more brushings to your daily routine.

The overall duration of the treatment will be different for each patient, but you only have to visit the orthodontist every 6-8 weeks to tighten and make adjustments. This is typically less often than most other braces alternatives.

These braces are becoming increasingly popular especially with teenagers and adults who want to straighten their teeth inconspicuously.

Invisalign

Invisalign is probably the most popular low-profile alternative to traditional braces for two main reasons; they are the most discreet, and they are also removable.

The Invisalign treatment entails a set of clear plastic appliances that are moulded to perfectly fit onto your teeth, each one gradually moves the teeth into their new position. Because these are clear and smooth on your teeth, they are the least noticeable. And because they are removable, patients don’t need to give up certain aspects of their lifestyle that would be hindered by traditional braces. This also makes them the easiest option for patients to maintain dental hygiene without having to navigate braces with floss and brushing.

If dental hygiene is already a struggle for patients, Invisalign might be the best option.

The only downside to Invisalign is that they are not as quick to fix the teeth as semi-permanent aligners because they are removed often and therefore, not working around the clock. But to many patients, the longer treatment process is worth the inconspicuousness.
