How long do braces stay on for?

Treatment times vary but the average time for braces is generally between one and three years.

How long does it take for braces to achieve the desired results? This is a question that many patients ask and the answer differs depending on how complex your orthodontic issues are. When you come in and see us for a consultation, we can provide you with an estimate after performing a thorough examination of your teeth and jaw. Some people may need braces for only a few months while others might need them for up to three years. The time frame depends on how severe the case is, as well as individual preferences and factors such as age or financial limitations.

What’s important to remember is that no matter how long your treatment takes, you can expect a healthier, more beautiful smile once your braces are removed. Read on to find out more about braces and the factors that could affect your experience…

What factors affect the duration of treatment?

The duration of your orthodontic treatment will depend on the severity of your orthodontic concerns. If your teeth are severely crowded or crooked, it may take longer to straighten your smile. In some cases, some teeth may need to be extracted prior to having braces fitted — this can lengthen the overall duration of your treatment quite considerably.

Your bite can also affect the length of your orthodontic treatment. If you have an issue such as an open bite, deep bite, underbite or crossbite, it can take longer to resolve the problem when compared with a simple case of misalignment.

Your lifestyle and dietary habits can also have an impact on your orthodontic treatment. When you wear braces, it is advisable that you avoid eating foods that are particularly hard or sticky as these can cause serious damage. If you break components of your braces, you could cause delays to your treatment.

In order to prevent delays and achieve optimal results, it is important that you see your orthodontist for regular check-ups and adjustments. Be sure to go for regular cleans, and adhere to any instructions and recommendations that your orthodontist gives you.

What braces are available?

There are a number of types of braces available, and the type that you choose will affect the length of your treatment. Some of the most popular options include metal braces, lingual braces and clear aligners. Metal and lingual braces are usually worn for between one and three years, but they can be worn for a shorter or longer length of time, depending on your concerns and aesthetic goals. Clear aligners are usually worn for less time than braces but are better suited to mild and moderate misalignment issues than more complex cases.
