Three tips for taking care of your teeth after braces

Maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment by taking care of your oral health.

If the end of your orthodontic treatment is in sight, you have plenty of reasons to celebrate. You can expect a straighter, healthier smile, as well as the chance to enjoy some of the foods you have avoided for the sake of your braces. But how do you take care of your teeth when your braces have been removed? Read on to find out more about life after orthodontic treatment and what you can do to ensure that your teeth stay healthy and straight in the long-term…

1. Get your teeth cleaned

One of best things you can do after your braces are removed is to see your dentist for a professional clean. During the cleaning process, your dentist will ensure that any surface stains are thoroughly removed, along with any plaque and tartar that may have accumulated over time. It can be difficult to keep your teeth perfectly clean when you have braces, so a professional clean will help to achieve a bright and hygienic smile that you will feel happy showing off.

While you are consulting with your dentist, it is also advisable that you have a routine check-up performed. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and check for any potential issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease. If you have any oral health concerns, your dentist will let you know what the best course of action is.

2. Wear your retainer

When your orthodontist has removed your braces, they are likely to recommend that you wear a retainer. A retainer is an appliance that is designed to hold your teeth in position and maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment in the long-term. Retainers are available in removeable and fixed types, your orthodontist will let you know which one is most appropriate for you.

Although you are probably excited at the prospect of not having braces anymore, it is important that you adhere to your orthodontist’s instructions when it comes to wearing your retainer. Your teeth will be particularly prone to shifting in the first few months following your orthodontic treatment, and your retainer will go a long way in keeping your smile perfectly straight.

3. Practice proper oral hygiene

Now that your teeth are straight and your bite-related issues have been resolved, be sure to take care of your oral health so that you can enjoy a beautiful smile for life. It is advisable that you establish a routine that involves brushing your teeth at least twice a day, and flossing daily. This will help to keep your teeth clean and free from plaque and tartar, which can lead to issues such as tooth decay and gum disease.

It is also a good idea to limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Try to eat a balanced diet that is packed with whole foods.

See your dentist for regular check-ups and cleans, and be sure to attend any follow-up appointments that you have scheduled with your orthodontist.
